2005 Annual Meeting:
To All:
On the same weekend as our A.B.A. meeting there is a large Revolutionary War reenactment at Prophecy Creek Park in nearby Whitpain Twp. This is about 10 miles from where we will be staying. I know Saturday is out but there is quite a program on Sunday. The last reenactment had well over a thousand participants. Go to www.prophecycreek.org/main.htm . The reenactment is related to The Battle of Germantown. Enjoy!!
Dear Aaron Burr Association Members, Here are a few websites to prepare everyone for the upcoming Aaron Burr Assoc. meeting in the Philadelphia/King of Prussia/Valley Forge area: Click here: Historic Valley Forge (look for article about Aaron Burr) Click here: Valley Forge National Historical Park (National Park Service) (see notes below) Click here: Welcome to the American Revolution Center (proposed center at Valley Forge - Tom Fleming is working on this) Click here: National Constitution Center (one of our tours in Philadelphia) Also, for anyone who wants to stay over on Sunday, October 9, there are bus tours running at Valley Forge Park at 11:00, 1:00, and 3:00 from the Visitors' Center on weekends (end Oct. 30). They cost $10 for adults and go to three locations, Washington's headquarters, Washington Memorial Chapel, and the soldiers' huts (we'll be visiting all of these on Weds., Oct. 5 on our self-guided tour of the park). Dear Friends: I have been in contact with the Community Board that encompasses the Greenwich Village area in Manhattan (My office is at West 11 St., off 5thAvenue), to find out the procedure involved in having a street named after Aaron. The process is fairly involved, and it does require the approval of the majority of Members of the Community Board. Later it goes to the Transportation Dept. of the City of NY. After 200 years or so, it is about time NYC honors Aaron, and I have already mentioned Hudson St. among others, which is a fairly major artery close to Aaron’s Richmond Hill. The response so far has been cordial, and formal. I would like to devote a little time at our Business meeting to talk about the strategy and the formal presentation of this proposal to the full Board. Regards, Antonio Burr
Yes, it is time for this. But I would not set sights too high. Attempting to rename a street like Hudson would run up against too much opposition, especially from the large establishments that front on it. Also, many streets are named after other past residents of the area, and I'm sure they must have vocal constituencies. A street with a neutral name like Spring Street would be a better choice, although it too, almost like Hudson, is a bit too long. I suggest taking a look at Little West 12th Street, which is only about three blocks long, carries a numeral designation that not too many people would defend---especially since there is a regular, long 12th Street---and it probably has no large business establishments fronting it.
